Currently, there are strong tendencies to decarbonize the metallurgical industry and the need to carry out the related structural changes in metallurgical equipment as well as to develop and implement new hydrogen technologies. Therefore, there is a need to educate specialists prepared for such a task. The thematic scope of the program of this course combines the principles and basics of classical metallurgy with the issues of modern, future-oriented technical solutions related to environmental protection, based on the reduction of the carbon footprint, i.e. the use of hydrogen as a reducing agent instead of traditional coal. In the first stage of education (1 semester) the study program covers general engineering issues in the field of extractive metallurgy, casting, plastic processing and shaping the properties of manufactured metal products. The aim of this part of education is to consolidate the basic knowledge for students. In the second stage of education (semester 2 and 3), specialized subjects are proposed introducing advanced knowledge in the field of modern design of solutions for metallurgical equipment and modern process technologies in the field of steel and non-ferrous metal production (e.g. hydrogen reduction processes, modernized electric arc furnace, processing of metallurgical waste in the context of closed-loop economy). In the final semester, a diploma seminar and the preparation of a diploma thesis are planned, i.e. acquiring highly specialized knowledge in the selected diploma subject, including carrying out research work, analyzing the results and formulating conclusions. Modern and well equipped laboratories along with experienced scientists and technical staff ensure high quality of the education program. Strong cooperation with industrial partners e.g. ArcelorMittal will provide a close insight into current challenges and development directions in metals production. Metallurgical Engineering is the best choice to gain the knowledge and practical experience in the fast developing and important branch of industry. The Metallurgical Engineering program at our university aims to provide specialized education in the field of modern extractive metallurgy. The program covers a wide range of content related to metal production, from raw material preparation to obtaining an ingot. It focuses on the construction and operation principles of devices used in production and ongoing processes techniques. The program enables students to gain theoretical knowledge of physical phenomena occurring during extraction processes and high-temperature chemical reactions, including thermodynamics and kinetics.
